 In the latest anti-abortion battleground, an upcoming trial in North Dakota will decide if an abortion clinic must inform its patients that a positive link exists between breast cancer and abortion--a position not supported by the latest science. The debate around whether abortion increases a woman"s risk of developing breast cancer has intensified in recent years, with 15 states considering mandating that women be informed of the potential risk and two states adopting such laws. Many researchers are troubled, however, by the trend because the weight of current scientific evidence does not seem to support a link between breast cancer and abortion. Montana and Mississippi already require that women seeking an abortion be informed that the procedure could increase their risk of developing breast cancer.

WASHINGTON When the Washington Press Club Foundation held its annual fund-raising dinner this week, the organization that was founded eight decades ago by a group of women journalists who had been denied entrance to the all-male National Press Club granted just one woman a speaking role at the event. That one woman was Kathleen Matthews, who shared the podium with her husband, Chris Matthews, the combative talk show host of MSNBC"s "Hardball" and emcee of Wednesday night"s dinner.

 Sri Lankan women who migrate to work as maids and domestic servants in Saudi Arabia suffer widespread abuse, rights activists say. One of them, 19-year-old Rizana Nafeek, is appealing a beheading sentence after a child in her care died. Her legal appeal has been filed, but a trial date has not been set. The uncertain status of the appeal--funded by human rights groups including the Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission--is a matter of life and death for 19-year-old Rizana Nafeek, a migrant worker from Sri Lanka sentenced by a Saudi court to beheading on June 16. A Sri Lankan activist who is in touch with Nafeek"s parents and lawyer says that if the appeal is rejected "no one will be informed but the prisoner who is in the death row. In this case Rizana will be informed three days before the beheading.
